Shutter Speed Assignment

This page contains my work for 'Shutter Speed Assignment'. Throughout my work I will try explain how different shutter speeds affect our photographs and what interesting effects it can create.I will experiment with different exposure times in various situations. I will explain why sometimes it's worth to extend out exposure time purposely to achieve impressive visual effects.

shutter speed- is a common term used to discuss exposure time, the effective length of time a camera's shutter is open. The total exposure is proportional to this exposure time, or duration of light reaching the film or image sensor.

'Slow shutter speeds'

Slow shutter speed is just a coercion when photographing in low light conditions. Long exposure may be used in many creative ways which sometimes make our work much more outstanding or even surreal. Beside this, blur or motion blur which is caused by long exposing time is very often used to express dynamics, movement, action, emotions.

This a photograph of a Baltic sea which I took two months ago. Here I used long shutter speed on purpose to fully express the calmness of the water surface.

There are two things which I could have used to improve this photograph:

1. I could have used Neutral Density filter to decrease the amount of light getting to the sensor and this would allow me to set even longer exposure without overexposing the whole composition. 'ND' filter also enhance colours and give a sky a warm hue.

2.  I could have used a Polarizing filter to make the sky darker and what's more important polarizing filter eliminates any reflections so It would make the water surface much more crystalline and these stones at the bottom would be more shown.

(Haley Dale Park Rochdale) This is another example of creative use of slow shutter speed. We can see how water flow is enhanced by when I created motion blur.

This is a photograph of a gig in Moses Gate pub in Bolton. I tried to avoid shooting with the flash so I set very fast ISO and I slowed down the shutter speed to enhance the motion and dynamics.

 'Cars'

Cars are very appropriate objects to show motion. By setting exposure to about from 1/6 to 1/40 and moving your camera along with the car we can produce very dynamic image. It's not easy technique and needs a little bit of a practice to avoid camera shaking (it really helps when using tripod or monopods are even better).

'Using slow shutter speed to create abstraction'

One day I went out for spontaneous outdoor session and I decided to take some photographs of a bird which was flying around me. I wanted to capture the motion and I also wanted to have my bird in focus unfortunately it was to fast so I decided to use a little bit of creativity and set very long exposure time and produce some abstract images which in my opinion are quite original.

 'Light Painting'

Light painting, also known as light drawing or light graffiti is a photographic technique in which exposures are made usually at night or in a darkened room by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera. In many cases the light source itself does not have to appear in the image

'Fast Shutter Speed'

Short shutter speed is very commonly used to freeze the subject in the creative way ( e.g. water, running animal etc.) Shutter speed of 1/2000 up to 1/6000 allows us to see things that we would not be able to see in reality with our human eyesight.

Example image.

Bubble burst is a perfect example of using fast shutter speed in creative way.

*We can compare fast shutter speeds to extreme slow motion videos where the video framing rate is increased even up to 2000fps (frames per second).
